The XC variometer

The new XC-Vario is a fully-fledged standalone variometer with a modern display on a sunlight-readable display, has a built-in loudspeaker, and also sends the data from all  sensors (elevation, vario, speed and temperature, position ) and if necessary FLARM via Bluetooth, Wifi  or also serially in different formats to the route software  XCSoar . A separate "XCVario" driver was developed, supplied to the XCSoar project, and has been available since 2021. The XCVario-22 series has an additional serial interface, e.g. for a serial connection, e.g. to an OpenVario, an increased output of the audio amplifier with 2 watts, a  CAN  bus for the   second device   and the CAN magnetic sensor, as well as an internal direction and position sensor (AHRS). The delivery of the data for displaying the position sensor as an artificial horizon in the navigation system is offered as an additional software option. Even without the SW option, the position sensor supplements the load multiple in the calculation model for a precise target speed, for a more accurate net vario or for the stall warning under accelerated conditions, and also supplies the data to XCSoar for the horizon display. The XCVario always shows the  'real' climb , regardless of the sideslip angle, mosquitoes or flap position, and supports the pilot optimally to find the best flap position, angle of inclination, etc. in order to climb optimally. So there is no need to get used to it. Die Variometerfunktion ist damit auch  unempfindlich  gegen zufällige oder auch absichtliche  Störung  der_cc781905-5cde-3194- bb3b-136bad5cf58d_ GPS  Signals as unfortunately observable these days.

When it came to the sensors, particular care was taken in filtering the data. A forward-thinking Kalman filter calms the vario display optimally, without the usual delay of a few seconds that conventional low-pass filters entail. In addition to the ballast, the load factor is also taken into account when calculating polar sinking.

The display of information on the XCVario can be configured, in addition to the previous "Airliner" style, the "Retro" style can also be used with the current software, as shown on the start page. Der neue Style realisiert eine auf Anfragen hin implementierte_cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b- 136bad5cf58d_ konventionelle  und gut ablesbarer  Zeiger-Darstellung  welche die most pilots know and are used to from the mechanical round instruments. Here, too, the display area is configurable, as are the units for vario, altitude and speed according to international standards such as knots, feet, flight level and more.

Das Besondere daran: Es ist  keine  weitere  spezielle  OpenVario  Hardware required , XC-Soar runs on almost any Andorid device. Most Android devices already have an internal GPS, alternatively the GPS data for the XCSoar can also be obtained via a FLARM, and in this combination you get a full-fledged 'OpenVario' with a moving map, a full-fledged route and final glide computer, a working one Wind calculation as well as target speed and many other features and functions that would not be possible without this data. A data exchange of the settings for the Mac Ready value, bugs and ballast from XCSoar to the Vario or from the Vario to XCSoar (incl. QNH) is possible with the own driver.

In connection with FLARM, XC-Soar offers valuable traffic information such as distance, altitude difference and climb rate of the other aircraft. Of course, touchscreen devices can be used for easy operation of XC-Soar. This means that complex and complicated stick remote controls are no longer necessary.

The software for this was developed on the open source platform github (https://github.com/iltis42/XCVario/blob/master/README.md) over a period of several years and now has many features and a high level of stability. The same applies to XCSoar, which has matured over many years with thousands of installations on a wide variety of hardware and is still running very stably even after many hours. For technical details, software and hardware and their evolution, see the github link above.

The device comes in an elegant satin black anodised aluminum housing. When selecting the electronic components, the focus was always on good quality with a long life expectancy; you will look in vain for short-lived electrolytic capacitors, batteries or LiPo rechargeable batteries with a limited life expectancy in the harsh temperature range of a cockpit. The electronics are manufactured in one of the largest factories in the world, fully automated, in series in three-digit quantities. The development, integration and quality testing of the Varios takes place in Germany, including tests in the air on extended flights of more than 850 km. The new hardware can be accommodated in almost any instrument panel like a 57 mm standard instrument and is offered at a reasonable price. For two-seaters, the same inexpensive hardware can be used as in two-seater mode, wirelessly connected via Wifi on the second seat. Wiring or tubing in the second place is therefore not necessary. This means that all functions are available on the second Vario without restrictions, just like on the front seat.

The hardware is fully programmed with the software, a growing library with almost 100 polars is already available and can be selected in the setup. An important feature is the software update (OTA = Over The Air) via the WiFi interface of the device, with which the software can be easily updated when installed and paves access to new features, polarities or new wishes on the user side.

From the 2021 series, extensions such as a flap sensor, a magnetic sensor and another serial device (OpenVario) are possible via the additional S2 interface. From the 2022 series, a CAN bus is also supported for extensions, the CAN magnetic sensor (RS232 thus remains free), or a wired second device in the two-seater.

With the magnetic sensor, in addition to a circling wind calculation, a quick live wind calculation can now also be carried out in level flight. The method reacts very quickly, a zigzag flight is not necessary. The deviation of the magnetic sensor is continuously optimized in the process.
